Telecommunications Case Study - BT in pursuit of dynamic learning

Authentication of eLearning Users and Learning Management Information

Challenge

Having transferred from BT, Steria Finance & Accounting Training owned a portfolio of Computer Based Training (CBT) modules, which were hosted on the BT Intranet. BT and Steria needed to find a way of easily accessing information on who has accessed CBT modules, and of providing “dynamically produced” certification of CBT completion.

Response

Steria F & A Training identified space on a suitable platform and developed code which enables users to be identified from corporate databanks, authenticated from their unique sign on identities.

Outcome

We are now able to identify who accesses the modules and test successful completion of CBTs, then send certificates of completion by e-mail so that users can print and hold with training records.

Accessibility issues for different user communities

Challenge

During a European implementation of a suite of Oracle e-Business software, Steria produced a number of e-learning modules covering different applications.

A number of users requested that the material in the Computer Based Training (CBT) should be printable. This reflected their cultural style, since they were not accustomed to on-line learning and in many cases simply wanted an easy point of reference in using systems.

Response

Steria Finance & Accounting Training took the material contained in the e-learning modules and converted the graphical explanations into an “online quick reference guide” which could be printed if required.

Outcome

These guides contained step-by-step guidance to using the systems, with examples of all screens required and links to the following steps in the process. The end result is that users can access material on-line as required, and can print if the need arises. This facility has now been extended to other Finance & Accounting clients.

BT Online Expenses CBT

Challenge

BT recently decided to upgrade its online expenses system based on the latest release of Oracle software. This is a very sensitive area for BT employees and it was crucial to ensure that the user perception of any training, and therefore the system, was totally positive.

A way of quickly educating a potential audience of over 100,000 people in the use of the system was required.

Response

Steria F & A Training designed a Computer Based Training (CBT) module which simulated the BT EQ2 Expenses System, taking users through a click by click learning experience, coupled with explanatory notes and links to process and policy documentation.

Outcome

To date we have had well in excess of 40,000 accesses to the CBT module. It has also been updated with sections relating to system enhancements.

Update of training material for new user population

Challenge

A large community of BT users who had previously been using different systems were due to be migrated onto corporate platforms, in a programme managed by a Steria competitor.

The user community needed a training vehicle to introduce the corporate systems. It was planned that the Steria competitor would provide a programme of face-to-face training for disparate users.

Response

Steria made the client aware that there was already a Computer Based Training (CBT) solution which had been provided to facilitate previous releases of the software, and suggested that it would be more economical and effective to design an updated module which reflected that latest release.

Outcome

Despite extremely tight timescales, Steria produced this updated e-learning module on time and within budget, to the client’s complete satisfaction.

The module will now be refined to cater for other parts of BTs corporate community.
